What's the difference between a Content ID claim and a copyright strike?

Content ID claims are automated notices from YouTube's system when it detects copyrighted material. The copyright owner chooses what happens: they can monetize your video, block it in certain countries, or track its viewership statistics.

Copyright strikes are legal actions resulting from a DMCA takedown request. These occur when a copyright owner formally requests removal of your content. Three strikes within 90 days result in channel termination.

Does giving credit protect me from copyright claims?

No, giving credit does not protect you from copyright claims or make your use fair use. According to YouTube's official guidance, "Giving credit to the owner of a copyrighted work won't by itself turn a non-transformative copy of their material into fair use."

How long do copyright strikes last on my channel?

Copyright strikes expire after 90 days if you complete YouTube's Copyright School and have fewer than three active strikes. If you don't complete Copyright School, the strike remains active on your channel indefinitely.
